A router is an electronic Device which helps us to join multiple Computer Networks together Via Wired or Wireless Connection.  Routers help to transfer Information (Data Packets) between Computer Networks. Router also chooses the best route for the Data packets so that we receive the information quickly. Router Also analyze the data being sent over the networks, Change it in packets, select the short and best route and send it to over different networks.

Advantage and Disadvantage of Routers:-

Routers also have some advantages and some disadvantages. 

Advantage of Routers:-

  1. Routers are able to function on LAN(Local Area Network) & WAN (Wide Area Network).
  2. Routers are able to connect different Media & Architectures.
  3. Routers reduce network traffic by creating collision domains.
  4. Routers are able to determine the best route for data to reach the destination.
  5. Routers can filter the broadcasts.


Disadvantage of Routers:-

  1. Routers are more expensive than Hub, Bridge & Switch.
  2. Routers only work with the routable protocol.
  3. Routing updates consume bandwidth.
  4. Increase latency due to a greater degree of packet filtering.
